Role
Art director, communicational designer
Context
Weald is a speculative digital tool developed in collaboration with Forest Research and MANE (Central Saint Martins). The project explores how design can support public engagement with forest health and citizen science in UK woodlands.
The proposal focuses on making complex ecological systems more accessible to non-expert audiences, positioning the tool as an entry point, not a replacement for existing expert-led monitoring frameworks.
Approach
Weald combines ecological data with narrative design, drawing on British woodland folklore to create an emotionally engaging experience. Three symbolic forest guides shape how users observe, learn, and interact with their environment, encouraging attentiveness and long-term connection.
The prototype imagines a mobile, offline-first system that supports lightweight observation and simplified reporting while prioritising being present in the forest over screen-based interaction.
I led the art direction and communication design, developing the concept, visual identity, interface design, and prototype. The outcome is a cohesive speculative proposal that bridges environmental research, storytelling, and interaction design.
